I use "Red Alder" from the Oregon Coast.  This wonderful wood makes excellent sticks. They are light and strong. "I have never had one split ". The colors are always a surprise and keep changing with age. Red Alder has natural dyes that were once used for dyeing cloth. It was used in pier pilings for its ability to resist water.
It is the "softest" hardwood and is a pleasure to carve.
